External serial modem: driver is irrelevant when it comes to modem performance/connectivity/retraining/errors: this type of modem has firmware inside the modem.
Best I can tell, D-Link does not offer any update to the firmware, so doesn't look like there's anything you can do in that regard.

Retraining and "errors" are not the same thing. There are different kind of errors when it comes to modem transmission. Modem protocol includes error correction. 5-30 errors in 30 minutes is not too bad; 5-30 retrains would be very bad.

What kind of post-call diagnostics does modem offer?
What chipset?

What connect rate do you get?
You may be able to improve performance by forcing a lower connect speed -
