I have working with this kind of modem for a while, earlier with a PC Chips board and XP SP1, almost always getting 54kbps. I had to replace my SIS board due to a hardware problem with a newone (PC Chips, different model), model M963G which come with the same modem. After that the modem conection tries to get the high speed then i see a re-negotiation and steps down connecting to 33.6kbps, modem cards from both mainboards are the same, i interchenged them with same results, i try with a different OS version XP SP2 and the same, i have install the last modem driver (v12.341.21.0) and the same, i used the string n0s37=14s34=21 with no difference. i connect to my telephone line a laptop getting almost 50kbps. I will apreciate any advise. Thanks.

Try

n0s37=14s34=6
and then progressively higher numbers for the s34=#.

Aloha! Richard.

Hi Richard, thank for your response. I tried n0s37=14s34=x, with x=0 to 21. With 0 i got 21,6 and all others 33,6. It seems to re-negotiate always. Thank for your advise.

The only other thing I can think of you might try is to put the modem in a different PCI slot and check that the routing of the phone wire isn't near anything that might cause interference -
the modem card might be getting RF or other electrical noise - from the motherboard/power supply or via the telephone line cord.
Also, make sure that you're using a phone line cord that has only 2 wires conntected through to each end. The 2 end wires (yellow/black) should not be connected through.

Other than that, the modem itself could have suffered some damage; or something changed in the phone network that affects this particular modem chipset's ability to deal with your line.
Aloha! Richard.

Hi Richard. Yes i thougt all the stuff regard the cabling an installed directly to the first phone jack with a brand new telephone cable (2 wires), but nothing changed. I wish ask you one question.. Everything is the same but the mainboard. I used the new modem which came with the new mainboard, and with the old modem too and the problem is the same; this kind of modem uses an special slot (not PCI) and there isn't other slot to test; the question is: This modem uses OS program (XP) to work (software modem) and the OS has to attend a lot of hardware in the mainboard, the hardware now is not the same because i replaced the mainboard and now is a new model with different chipsets. Is it possible that some controller (for example video) uses more resources and it is not possible for the CPU (i used the same old CPU -Celeron 1.7 Ghz-) to give the modem the attention required to work at 52kbps? I searched for information in the web pages of PcChips MB and in a lot of web pages regard the HSP56 MR modem, and the only thing i found is that it is not a very good choice for modems, but it worked fine for me for long time (until my MB brokes). It is true that this is a $10 modem, but i wished to know Why is it working under its specs, but i think i'll have to replace it with a PCI hardware modem asap and left this as a hidden reason. Anyway if you agree with me or not, please make me know it. Thanks a lot again.
Gabriel.

The processor speed at 1.7ghz shouldn't be an issue....

Aloha! Richard.
