I have a USR5610B that stalls. It remains connected but no data will go up or come down. CallWave doesn't even work when this happens. Only way to fix the problem is disconnect and reconnect. Problem is unpredictable. May do it as soon as I connect or may be an hour later. Sometimes I may have to reconnect 5-6 times in a single night.

See if there is any connectivity via IP address /backbone tests -

if there is, the problem is not modem related but something deeper in Windows or your ISP.

What version of Windows are you running?

My system is:
Windows XP Professional SP2 + HOTFIXES
Zone Alarm Firewall
Norton 2005 Anti-virus

Asus A7V-880
Athlon XP 2100+
1 gig Ram
ATI 9800 video
40 GB HD

It's aways done this despite different motherboard, ram, and processor but same hard drive.
Tried three different ISP's and it still does it.
Makes me think it's either my system config or the modem.

I have the exact same problem! I came with the hopes of finding an answer to this very same question. I have the same modem USR5610b. A few things I have tried. First off I tried the drivers from us robotics, that was a big mistake. After installing the latest driver, I could not obtain a connection anything higher than 33.6 and most of the time it connected at 28.8. So I rolled back the driver, still only connecting at 28.8. Reformatted the hard drive and let XP use its generic driver. Back to connecting at 49.2 again. On some occasions I will get 50.6. Most annoying however is that my modem will just quit working. Stays connected but nothing. And like the previous post by gmwindy, this will happen either seconds after connecting or maybe an hour or two later. It occurs every day all day long. Unfortunately where I live here in kansas, I am too far away for DSL (they told me 1 mile outside the range) and cable is not on our street at this time. I looked into satellite, but by no means am I going to dish out $580 for 512k download and 56k upload, simply ridiculous is that Directway connect system. However Direct TV is a blessing in this rural area :)

I have 22 years experience in the telecommunications field. From phone lines to data jacks, to complete network setups including the installation of servers and related software. We have only 1 line in the home, wired by myself using CAT 3 cable, which is wired directly from the NIC to the jack on my wall. There is no detectable line noise that I can come up with. I have run just about all diagnostics that I can find for my modem. All tests seem to be within specs or are 'normal'. I am beginning to think its the modem itself, and am now willing to try another brand. So if no help can be derived here, can someone point out another quality product that would be worth the money? I have a best buy and comp usa store nearby. Best buy does Creative modems, and comp usa has a bunch of different brands, but I find it hard to find any reviews on any of these modems offered by these two stores.

Well I gave up. After fighting the USR modem for more than a year, I went out and bought a new modem. This time I bought an el-cheapo from Walmart. It was a Stratitec IC56A.
It uses the Agere DSP chipset. It was only $23. Every since I have installed it everything has worked perfect. Some of my friends bought this modem also and they have had good luck as well. Goodby to the expensive USR ($80) modem.

Well - original poster seems to have given up - but since another poster has same problem I would add -
sometimes putting modem in different PCI slot can help with this type of issue

The 5610B modem is a full hardware-controller based modem - that means the driver should have no effect on connection performance/speeds as the driver only defines the modem's capability, all of the signal processing is done in the modem hardware using program code in modem firmware (which can be updated by 'flashing' the modem.)
