Hello, I work in a business located in an older building. I have been told that our modems won't work because the phone lines cannot support a modem. Is this possible and why? Is there any way to solve it short of running new wire because we'd like to place phone calls via modem?

If the phones connect to a control unit (switch), then it is possible that the wiring connecting phones to this switch is not compatible with modem because the wiring is not connected to standard phone line.
If this is the case, separate wiring needs to be run to get the POTS (plain old telephone service) line.

(there's nothing wrong with the wire - the problem may be what the wire is connected to - if there is wire to a phone you don't need, you could use it if the other end were relocated to a plain old telephone line, but you would no longer be able to use the business telephone on that wire.)

Aloha! Richard.
