The dial up connection works 99% of the time. The problem is when I have a problem without the audio I have difficulty troubleshooting the connection.

If I use cached credentials and use the icon within windows to connect the audio (Dial tone, dialing, handshake etc.) is present.

Examine (post here) your modem log.

The at command
m#
almost universally controls modem speaker.
the values for # are: 0 = speaker always off;
1= speaker on until CONNECT (carrier detected)
2 = speaker always on.

You could try putting
m1
in extra settings (initialization string), or otherwise finding appropriate place to put intialization.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for the tip. I am having trouble figuring out where to put the init string and the syntax. The O/S is XP and I am connecting to an AD domain.

Initialization string is in Modem Properties / Advanced and called "Extra Settings"
www.modemsite.com/56k/initmagic.asp

The init string only applies on software using TAPI. Not sure if remote login uses TAPI, but I would think so.

Aloha! Richard.
