Donna17 Tl Posts: 2 USA	Posted - 1/10/2006 4:26:08 PM Hi, Non tech female needs modem help. I boot up and logon to yahoo and connect with no problem. If I log off and go to logon a second time in one sitting I get an error 50 message from yahoo and a error 654. I have been on with yahoo and they say it's an e-machine problem.. E-machine sent a new modem...which I knew I didn't need because I CAN logon..but not a second time. I installed the new modem and still had the same problem...which I knew I would. I have no virus or spys..I downloaded and ran new antis..thinking that could have been the problem. The only way I can logon again is if I shut down and start up the computer again. ALSO...if I logon an don't connect to the internet right away...let's say I wait 1/2 hour or so...I can't even log on the first time and get the same error messages. The computer was new in June...this problem started in Sept...and I've been fighting with it since..trying different things to solve the problem..from different sources. Can anyone out there advise...in SIMPLE terms...I am not a computer geek..I hope I gave enought info... Thanks for your help! Donna
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA	Posted - 1/14/2006 4:52:42 PM Examine your modemlog for clues - suggest you copy/paste post it here in reply You should enable modemlogging, and check/post the modem log after you have successfully and unsuccessfully connected to Internet. www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.asp Don't quite understand your report on error message - Is the error 654 a standard Windows error message (DUNS error)? www.modemsite.com/56k/dunserror.asp The 'error 50' message - where does that come from? Are you using the Windows dialer/connectoid or a 3rd-party dialer? www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp Aloha! Richard.

I could get on line twice and the third time it wouldn't let me...so I had to reboot to get back on line. v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA	Posted - 1/18/2006 5:06:41 PM I don't see anything of a failed call in the modemlog; however, what I do see is that besides you dial-up connection, there apparently is some other software running that takes control of the modem when you disconnect - this could be fax or answering machine software - your problem could probably be resolved by un-installing or disabling this other software. If you aren't sure what this software is, check Control Panel->add remove programs - looking for answering machine software or, if you don't find it there, immediately after booting up the PC, use CTRL+ALT+DEL to go to 'Task Manager', then click the processes tab and using search engine, attempt identification of process that is using the modem so you can uninstall it. The DUNs errors 654 and 681 are both rare/unusual, and my page on DUNs errors - www.modemsite.com/56k/dunserror.asp doesn't have anything other than the descriptions - but the first, 654, would indicate the .inf file supplied for the modem is 'defective'/in error.
