I'd like to acquire a high-quality 56K PCI modem. I see that there's a survey database of modems, but it's hard to tell which might be PCI. For ISA, the best modem I know of is/was the USR V.Everything. Is there a PCI modem of comparable quality?

I would recommend looking over the internal modems at Newegg.com and read some of the reviews. Find one you like and either order from them or look for it on Ebay. The only USR pci modem I am familiar with is the 5610b . For gaming it is hard to beat on dial up, gbut it is too finnicky if you have marginal phone lines. Good luck!

Bill, thanks for your kind reply. I did exactly as you said, about a month ago. I found the reviews on newegg a mix of love and hate. I ended up buying two 5610B modems, one new, one used. Both were flashed to the latest firmware, and I used both in the same PC with the same driver, latest current release. Result? The new one is very solid, whereas the used one sometimes has the behavior cited elsewhere, maybe newegg, namely, of being connected but going "silent"--no traffic. When that happens one has to disconnect and reconnect. Both modems consistently get a 53K connection, whereas all the many V.Everything modems ever tried on the same line connect at 49K.
