Hi,

I have been having a problem connecting via dial-up for the last couple of days. When I try to dial up I get this error message:

Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

My laptop is running Win XP SP2 with an internal Smartlink 56K modem (Audio Modem Riser?). I have upgraded the driver to the latest available from SL and have looked at the troubleshooter on this website but to no avail.

If you need any further info, please ask. Hope someone can help

Thanks

v.Richard

Check the modem log - some other software may have the modem in use already when you try to dial out.

I have phoned Fujitsu-Siemens support and they said it is a software problem but I think they're just fobbing me off as I formatted and re-installed Win XP before calling. I have not installed a single thing except the drivers (from CD) which came preintalled. It should be the same configuration when the laptop was new.

Also, the modem started to work while I was talking to support. The laptop had been in standby mode all day before I called. When I restarted windows it didn't work again. What can I do?

Well, they may be correct saying it's a software problem - their software(/driver) that is: the modem is a soft(ware)modem - the only hardware part of it is the line interface.

Standby could be a problem: it is not unusual for modem drivers to not be compatible with Windows/standby/power management.
Isolate whether this is the problem - try not using standby and using the modem.

Check what driver version you have - this is the response to
ati3
issued from Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port - see
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

Then, check the Smartlink site to see whether you have the latest driver they offer, and if not, try updating the driver.

Hi and thanks for the help,

The modem doesn't work when I load up windows afresh. It only stared working that one time when I was on the phone to support- typical! I have tried to get the modem to work by going into standby and on again several times but can't get it to work.

When using hyperterminal it comes up with a message off the top of my head (after the com properties dialogue box): the port is in use by another program, close the program and try again. I can't remember the exact message as i'm using a different pc.

I have tried the updated driver but I still have the same problem. Anyway, it's going to be looked at under warranty.

Thanks
