I have a thinkpad modem and it connects above 33k to my isp but the connection drops;therefore while downloading or simply browsing it will time out for a few seconds(not disconnect) and start transferring again.i have found only if i set the modem to connect at 33k and lower it functions normally.is there any specific reason for this?

Retrains will cause interruption of data flow.
To investigate issue, you'll need to know:
What chipset does the modem use?
www.modemsite.com/56k/chipset.asp

What driver version is installed on the modem?
www.modemsite.com/56k/driver.asp

What do the post-call diagnostics indicate?
www.modemsite.com/56k/diag.asp

If there is a newer/later modem driver, it might help.
Otherwise, limiting connect speed so there are no retrains.
