Hello,
My connection dial-up speed has been stuck on 24.8 k (24,800 bps) for last two weeks. It generally flows in the 49 to 53.3k range. I have XP, compuserve, 128 MB sdram, 56k modem, 1.30 intell processor. Have tried system restored to no success. Any help to get me back to 49 to 53k speed range?, and please keep answers simple as I am a novice. Thank you.

There is no such speed - 24.8k for a modem.
Could be 28.8k or 26.4k - and would be nice to know what you are really getting.
Why?
Your phone company may have changed the facilities that provides your line in a manner that prevents high-speed (56k protocol) connections. If this is what's happened, there's nothing you can do short of moving or getting the telco to change your line.

You can -
connect modem directly to demarc or disconnect all other devices from phone line - see

Tell us what kind of modem you have - the chipset and driver version

Use Hyperterminal to call other ISP phone #s to see if you can get a higher speed to any phone # - see

Aloha! Richard.
