I have installed a USR PCI faxmodem on my Windows XP computer and am having trouble connecting to my ISP. Occasionally, I am able to connect at 36.8 kbps but most of the time, I get a 721 DUNS error message. I have enabled PPP logging and have compared the entries for a successful connection to an unsuccessful connection and it appears to be related to LCP. On the successful connection, the LCP config-REQ returns a config-ACK. When I get a 721 error, I get timeouts on the config-REQ and after several timeouts, the connection attempt is aborted. There is reference to LCP problems on modemsite.com pertaining to DUNS error message 718 and it says something about a TCP setting on the connectoid but I don't know what I should be doing to resolve. Any ideas?

Richard,

I verified error correction is enabled for the modem. Here is my modem log. I appreciate your help.

The call termination cause CCT108 is off is related to auto-callback - maybe your ISP has bad setup on some of its lines/modems?

I would suggest:
Try disabling 56k on the modem
(+MS=V34 or the s= settings at
www.modemsite.com/56k/ms.asp )
see if you have any problem connecting with V.34 only.

If there is no problem, re-enabled 56k, and turn off PCM upstream.
www.modemsite.com/56k/v92c.asp

Aloha! Richard.

I contacted my ISP (Time Warner - Road Runner)and they said they had an issue on their end that was causing remote dial access to connect sporadically. They have since fixed the problem and I can now connect consistently at 40 kbps when using their local dial-up phone number. So my modem seems to be working OK now. However, I'm hoping you can now help with another problem that may not involve the modem. I plan to use my computer at my cabin. The ISP doesn't have a toll free number in the cabin area and I don't have a long distance telephone service at the cabin. In order to call the non-local ISP phone number, I need to use a calling card. I have programmed the dialing rules on the connectoid and the computer successfully dials the 1-800 number, then the calling card account number and then the area code and phone number for the non-local dial-up server. After all the dialing stops, I hear the modem noises but the two computers never successfully connect. I get error 678 - the remote computer did not respond. I'm using the same dial-up phone number when I connect from home as I do from the cabin; the only difference is the cabin dialing sequence uses the calling card. I tried using different dial-up phone numbers from the cabin but they all fail to connect. Anything you can suggest?

Lengthen the amount of time the modem waits to complete handshake (receive carrier) before disconneting -
the command is
ats7=## - where ## = # of seconds to wait
It is also a setting in the connectoid
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp
but, if you include extra initialization, for example (at)s7=99, it will override any connectoid setting.

Aloha! Richard.

Richard, I added the ats7=99 to my modem initiation string but to no avail. For some reason, the handshake between my computer and the remote dial-up server will not occur when I'm trying to connect through a calling card. Whats puzzeling is the handshake works every time when I'm not connecting through a calling card. I called AT&T (the calling card vendor) to see if they knew of anything that would prohibit connection when using their calling card service and they said no. The modem noises are definitely different between the two types of connection attempts. Anything else you can think of?

When you say the handshake does not occur, do you mean that it doesn't occur at all, or that the handshake sounds begin but no carrier is ever obtained?

The calling card call may go over different lower quality circuits, including modem-unfriendly VoIP; you might be able to connect by disabling 56k with the (AT) +MS=V34 initialization string.

Aloha! Richard.

Richard,

I disabled 56k with the (AT) +MS=V34 initialization string and was able to successfully connect to my ISP using a calling card. Thank you for all your help on this baffling problem.

Paul
