Hi,
I was reinstalling win xp on an Advent laptop 7055, I formatted it, losing all the drivers that were installed, I've none of the disks that came with the laptop.

I installed Smart Link 56K Voice modem drivers. Now the modem shows up in Device manager, but when I go to query the modem
"The port that the modem is using is currently open by another application. Exit any application that may currently be using the port."

In device manager there is no com port under ports, when i look under advanced com ports in the modem properties com3 is selected, and doesn't show any other port in use. When I change the com port a warning message comes up, but still doesn't make any difference.

There is no where in the bios to change any com setting.
Have found 2/3 identical problems on other forums, all with no resolution.

Written on the modem is askey 1456VQL4A (INT).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Am fixing this (trying) as a favour to an aunt, and it's turning into a nightmare. Don't want to hand it back to her like this.

You don't have the right driver....
Appears the modem you have is also used in Gateway notebooks - try here for the driver:

Aloha! Richard.

Downloaded driver, followed instructions for xp, only nothing comes up in add/remove programs for the modem. so ran setup where the files were extracted to. It didn't install the modem :(
