I have a Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem Driver version 2.15.57.3 that came with my Dell PC running Windows XP 2005 Media Edition.

I have a cable modem but when I am using the computer SOMETIMES a green telephone headpiece pops up and shows me who the call is from. I really enjoy this feature because I can decide whether or not to get up and answer the phone or continue working. But sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have the Modem on Hold software installed on the Dell.

What can I do to continue to make this 'nice to have' feature to work continuously? Dell doesn't seem to be able to answer this question.

Thank you for any advice.

When this happens, your phone line is or is not in use (is or is not offhook)?

(If your phone is not in use, this is 'type 1' caller id, and isn't related to modem-on-hold, although the modem may be getting the caller id info.
You could try 3rd-party software like:

It is a new call coming in. I am online with a cable modem and sometimes when the phone rings the green receiver pops up with the phone number that is calling in.

The cable/cable modem has nothing to do with phone line and whether it is in use (unless you have cable phone service).

Do you have a standard phone line from a phone company?
Is that phone line in use (someone in the house on a call) when the box comes up?
There are 2 different types of caller id - one when the line is not in use, the other when the line is in use. Modem-on-hold/modem deals with the second case.
Some modems can recognize both types of caller id, but reporting/handling of the calls is way different: software the works with type 2 won't work with type 1 and vice-versa.

Aloha! Richard.

Yes I do have a standard phone line and the caller id shows up when nobody is on the line. So it must be when the line is not in use. Whatever it is, it works only sometimes and I don't know what I am doing to make it stop.

Thank you for your help with this.
