Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 7/17/2006 8:56:49 PM I have a question about my internet connection - I have a Smartlink SL2800 PCI modem and I use a second phone line to connect to the internet mostly...Now, my connection speed varies a lot...such as for a month or so I'll connect at maybe 30k-40k and then one day it slows down to anywhere from 4800-12000bps...and right now I can't connect to the internet at all with my 2nd phone line because it disconnects me but I can connect at at least 4800bps and it stays online...can somebody help me on what the problem might be? Thank you :) |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 7/18/2006 7:11:13 PM On that last post I meant I can actually connect at at least 4800bps on my main line and I can't connect because of the disconnection problems on my 2nd phone line... |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 7/26/2006 12:29:47 PM What driver version are you running on the SL modem? www.modemsite.com/56k/smartlink.asp How long have you used the modem? How long have you had 2 phone lines? Try the demarc test Aloha! Richard. |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 7/26/2006 7:46:46 PM Currently the version is 4.00.01SL02 and I've been using the modem for about 4-5 months...I've had 2 phone lines for about 2 and a half years and never have I had trouble connecting except that it would occassionally slow down because of line noise and the phone company had fixed my 2nd phone line that had recently lost the dial tone but it didn't cause this problem immediately it was still ok for a couple weeks until now...I'll check out the demarc test page and I also did a hyperterminal test with this one website that could detect the maximum speed that i could get on my phone line and it said the max was 7200bps but whether that's accurate and whether its the modem or the phone line or the modem i'm not sure...but thanks for the tip and keep giving me advise! :) |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 7/27/2006 10:16:44 PM Also, I did check out the demarc test page...unfortunately, from the modem phone jack to the interface box is i'd say about 150-200 feet around the back of my house and I have no idea where i'd get a phone line cable that long so now what should I do? And, does it sound like it is a problem with the modem, the phone line, or the ISP? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 7/30/2006 8:02:47 AM If you can't get to the demarc, you should follow the alternate procedure on the page www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp of disconnecting EVERYTHING from the phone line except the modem. The problem could be phone line, modem driver, or modem - hard to say which..... Aloha! Richard. |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 7/30/2006 1:23:05 PM Alright, so I checked to see if there was any other phones, answering machines, fax machines connected to the 2nd phone line and there never has been because we got the 2nd phone line just for connecting to the internet so there's nothing interfering with the 2nd line...also, yesterday I was able to connect on my 2nd phone line at the same speed as the main line (7200bps) and it didn't disconnect me for about 2 hours and I didn't have as much trouble connecting but today I tried to connect with the 2nd line and I had trouble connecting again..so do you think maybe the weather could be affecting my modem in some way..we haven't had rain lately but its been extremely hot and humid..i don't know if humidity could affect it or not but just a thought?...also my current driver version is 4.00.01SL02 which is fairly new but there is a 4.20.01 version so would upgrading make a difference? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 7/31/2006 9:35:33 AM Upgrading might make a difference - but, I'd suspect the phone line/phone company/weather may be a factor. Before you got the 2nd line did you use modem? Did the problem start at the same time you got the 2nd phone line? Often, telcos will use 1 set of wires (normally just 1 phone line) to provide 2 lines of service, and neither line will have the quality needed for good high-speed modem connections.... www.modemsite.com/56k/addpline.asp Aloha! Richard. |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 7/31/2006 10:17:38 PM The problem did indeed start when we got the 2nd phone line...with my only phone line before I got the 2nd phone line I was able to connect at 33k-40k very consistently with no trouble connecting...and I believe that the guy that came to separate the line separated very close to the interface box and it is wired as the same line throughout the house..so, I'm starting to lean more toward the idea it is the phone line/phone company/phone line noise/weather conditions myself...the last few nights I have been able to connect at an increasing amount of time without disconnection (Sat. nite - 2 hours, Sun. nite - 3.5 hours, and tonight i've currently been on 4.25 hours and it hasn't disconnected me yet) however I still have connection problems during the day which means I assume it could be the heat and humidity that may be affecting it somehow...sorry for the long posts by the way and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to help me Richard :), I understand in my case its hard to diagnose the problem because it sure has me stumped so I shall continue to listen to your input... |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 8/5/2006 11:52:47 AM Please read this page again: www.modemsite.com/56k/addpline.asp I'd try and get some help from the telco - and possibly consider going back to 1 line if they can't give you 2 totally separate / quality lines. (In other words, get rid of the "pair gain"). Aloha! Richard. |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 8/8/2006 7:34:20 PM Ok, I will take that advice...thank you Richard...Verizon's my phone company so I shall get in contact with them... :) One more question I have tho - |
zepper Tl Posts: 28 USA | Posted - 10/15/2006 10:44:51 AM At night it's cooler. I'd suggest rewiring your home phone jacks with Cat 2 cable (a handy friend could do it - perhaps for a premium pizza and beer reward ;-) ) - Dalco.com has some 3-pair Cat 2 for a decent price. Disconnecting problem: Be sure the Call Waiting feature on your second line is not turned on - the phone companies being the way they are it could be on by accident for that line. It is not needed for a modem line (outgoing calls only). ..bh. Ease your voting choices: Find the candidate backed by the Trial Lawyers and vote for the other one. |
Cain6 Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 10/15/2006 12:45:44 PM Thanks a lot for your help Zepper...I'll look in to that... |
