Please don’t jump on me for using Layman’s terms, I am a Diesel Mechanic and don’t have a working knowledge of computers. I am just a computer user.

Since 2004, when I bought a new computer with Windows XP Home and a USR External modem Model 5686 Sportster, I have suffered with what I call lockups. All data appears to stop. My only fix is to log off and back on and then I can operate for a while until it happens again. About 6 months ago, I bought a new computer figuring it was a computer problem. The new computer uses Windows XP Pro. My Modem is a USR external V.92 Sportster model 5686. I have a second USR modem exactly the same, that also produces the same problem. I live very remote in the Mountains and have one to help me. I did learn about the modem log and started to watch it and compare good sessions to bad (lockup) sessions.

I found that on every session where I have a lockup, I see a line in the Modem Log
“CCT108 Turned Off” I Googled CCT 108 Turned Off and find that many people are also having this data lockup and having to log off and back on to correct it. All of the Google Hits get into real technical stuff that I don’t understand what they are talking about. Then I found this forum in one of the hits.

Will someone please tell me what I have to do to fix this problem. In reading all the hits, I believe the problem has something to do with Windows XP and certain Brand modems and what they call chip sets ? I always get a 50.6K connection. Some evenings I can run all evening without a lockup. Other times, the Internet is useless as I have to log off and on every few minutes.

I have to go to the City tomorrow and can/will buy whatever is needed to fix this problem. My sincere thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Paul

Suggestions:
Try the modem with V.92 disabled -
put
s32=128 +PCW=2 +PIG=1 +PQC=3
for initialization string (extra settings)
www.modemsite.com/56k/initmagic.asp

Disable the modem's escape code and/or increase the escape code guard time -
s2=255 s12=99
www.modemsite.com/56k/escape.asp

Check modem connectoid -
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp
Hardware flow control should be checked;
Enable Modem error control;
Try with compression checked / not checked - see if that makes any difference;
Make sure your modem initialization string does NOT include
AT&F - USR modems require AT&F1;
post your modem log if you still have a problem;
AND, post your modem's post-call diagnostics along with the modem log
www.modemsite.com/56k/diag3com.asp

Aloha! Richard.

Richard, Thank You. I will try what you suggest and post back here. It will take some time to be sure if its fixed as some times I can run hours without a problem.

Regards

Hello Richard;

I tried disableing V92, still get the lockup, and only could connect at 14.4K

I tried disableing the escape code, still get the lockup and could only connect at 28.8K

Hardware Flow control is checked
Enable Modem Error COntrol is checked
I tried both ways with compression and no compression, still get the lockup.

I went thru the instructions on Hyper Terminal to send AT commands to the modem. The cursor woudl appear in the box, but no text would be displayed, in fact when I typed the first A, it would go into a connect mode.

Here is the modem log after the lockup. Note at the end is the CCT108 Turned off msg.

Thanks for your help, I have been fighting this lockup for 2 years.

I'd suggest checking the USR site to see if there is a firmware upgrade for your modem;
The 1 thing I don't like - your connect rate of 49.3k downstream is good, but the upstream rate - 19.2k is very bad.
(In Hyperterminal, the response to
ati7
will display the firmware version currenty in your modem)

Suggest limiting your connect speed (downstream) to 48k, or 46.6k by putting
&N32 (for 48k) or
&N31 (for 46.6k)
in extra settings / init string -
www.modemsite.com/56k/ms.asp

Aloha! Richard.

Hello Richard;
Thanks for the suggestions. I just went to the USR site and the firmware/flash is 5.4.62. ATi7 shows my firmware is 5.4.62 so I am current. I have changed the modem init string to &N32 for a 48 K connection and will try it for a day or so and report back here with the findings.

I did find one thing that has helped some. The dial up numbers I have been using are for a V92 connection. I found a toll free dial up number ATT has with a V90 connection. USing that, I have had less lockups, but they are still there.

My Sincer thanks for your help

Paul

Hello Richard;

Running at 48 K and also 46 I still get the frequent lockups and the CCT108 Turned OFF as the reason for the disconnect. Here is a print out of ATI6;

I don't know what else to suggest other than replacing the modem ---
Be careful - I'd suspect that using the toll-free 800 # for access may result in additional per minute charges billed to you...!

Aloha! Richard.

Richard, Thank You, I appreciate your help. This is the second USR external that has the same problem. I may see if I can find a used internal to try. IF that does any better, I can then buy that make.

This problem is like fighting the seven headed dragon for 2 years, I cant win LOL.
