I get error 680 when trying to connect. The device manager says modem is working properly - I uninstalled and reinstalled it anyway and that did not work. I changed settings and that did not work so changed them back. I can hook up a regular phone to the back of my computer and get a dial tone but I can't seem to get the computer to recognize it. Does anyone have any ideas? Do I need a new modem? Please help........

Some inexpensive modems use electricity from the phone line to power part of the modem. I live in a rural area and have experienced a no dial tone problem like you simply because my phone line voltage is not sufficient. One way around it I found was to pick up the telephone connected to the modem, once I heard dial tone I could then dial out on the modem and hang up the phone. You may need to replace your modem. I've had the best experience with Agere Soft Modems.

The modem may be bad/damaged -

What kind of modem is it? Did it ever work?

Aloha! Richard.

The modem has always worked - I do wonder if lightning got it though. I will check into some new ones and see what happens. Thank you everyone for the help!!!
