My modem is factory installed, I am using a Compaq Presario, running windows XP, I am always getting kicked offline, however the problem is that i have to restart my computer before it will "letgo" of the program? If you understand? I can be in the middle of something, and then the page wont load, i pick up receiver of phone i have here (for that purpose) and dial tone, i know then that i am offline, so i close all E windows, and then hit disconnect because program still shows online, then it wont disconnect, i have to go into network properties, and hit disconnect, sometimes it will do it, but then when i reopen the internet connection, it tells me that the modem is in use with another program, so then i restart computer and it will work fine. Please help!!! I can replace modem if that is it, but just to be sure, before i purchase one. And which kind works with mine? just a standard PCI modem card? thanks so much !

And the modem's post-call diagnostics (which might already be in the modem log, depends upon the type/chipset of the modem you have) see

You could have spyware/malware/trojan that is grabbing the modem; you could have other software that is interfering - versions of Quickbooks as well as some Symantec products including WinFax can be problematic.

From your description thus far, I doubt the problem is the modem - I would try to remove all unnecessary software and system tray applications that run at start up disabled.
Check your task manager (hit ctrl+alt+del and select Task Manager) -> processes right after you boot up. A "clean" system might have in the neigborhood of 30 processes running at start up. A system from the manufacturer, overloaded with "extras" - mostly unnecessary and many of which you don't use - could have close to double that number.
To see what the various tasks are, you can use google to search for the process name.
