sweets Tl Posts: 10 USA | Posted - 9/22/2006 6:35:47 AM I reformatted & installed Windows 98SE on this system. I installed the modem drivers correctly via the Conexant website for 9x drivers. As evidenced by the Diagnostics tab the drivers seem to be corrrectly installed, AT commands & responses are there. However I'm still unable to dial up my ISP. I installed my dial-up ISP via their CD but I'm not familiar with the "Network Connections" tab & what I have to do inside there. Can you provide step by step instructions or point to an article that can. Inside "Network Connections" I find both "Make A New Connection" & "Netzero" (my ISP). Should I uninstall Netzero & work strictly with "Make A New Connection" ? |

sweets Tl Posts: 10 USA | Posted - 9/24/2006 3:18:11 AM What phone number & area code am I supposed to put in the connections box, Is it my home telephone number & area code? All calls are to have the prefix "1" as well. Or am I supposed to put my ISP's local dial-up numbers ? I know that the ISP has to dial a central number in order to connect, but when I try to connect the modem never connects. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 9/26/2006 10:35:53 AM The phone # to dial is the number your ISP gives you to use in your area. Whether you include the 1 and area code or not will depend upon how you've set up the computer/modem/locations: if you've specified dialing rules, the 1/area code may be included without entering them. I would suggest If you can't make a connection using Hyperterminal - which doesn't use any dialing rules or anything else other than the Hyperterminal program - to make a CONNECT to the ISP phone number, you won't be able to do it otherwise. (Note - Hyperterminal will NOT allow you to use the ISP for an Internet connection - it WILL allow you to test the modem's ability to connect to the ISP.) As long as you can CONNECT with Hyperterminal, proceed to setting up the Network Connection. Aloha! Richard. |
sweets Tl Posts: 10 USA | Posted - 9/26/2006 12:50:02 PM Yes Richard you've confirmed the phone number question for me but even though the modem drivers are installed properly the Hyperterminal will not produce a dialtone. In fact my computer freezes every time I tried the Hyperterminal. Do you have any other suggestions to get this modem to work? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 9/28/2006 10:10:41 AM At what point does the computer freeze when trying Hyperterminal? - Loading the program? Issuing AT command? Issuing the dial command? It sounds as if the driver is not installed correctly or is not compatible with the modem you have; possibly a PCI/interrupt issue which might be corrected by moving the modem to a different PCI slot - But, it could be that the driver that Conexant offers isn't right for your modem - at the time your PC/modem was made, PCTel was an independent company and Conexant was a competitor. If you know the modem worked before you reformatted your system, and switching PCI slots doesn't work, you'd need to find a different driver from a different source that's compatible with your modem and Windows98SE. Aloha! Richard. |
sweets Tl Posts: 10 USA | Posted - 9/28/2006 11:05:40 AM The computer freezes or locks up just as I get to the terminal screen. If I'm quick (under 3 sec) I can type "AT" & press Enter. If I'm slow it locks up just as the terminal screen appears. Then I have to restart & do the Scandisk dance. I tried moving to PCI slot # 2 I was in slot # 3 Why does it still say "COM3" or are these two different things entirely? I didn't see any modem drivers for an Acer built 8/05/1998, do you have another link for that? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 9/29/2006 11:38:08 AM The COM port is not related to the PCI slot; For PCI modems what matters is getting a driver for your modem chipset / PCI ID (see www.modemsite.com/56k/pcitree.asp ) - the computer mfr is not really important.
Aloha! Richard. |
