fowlergare Tl Posts: 1 New Zealand | Posted - 10/17/2006 12:52:44 AM Hey I was looking for some help here. I have an Intel 536EP modem and I'm experiencing periods of no data transfer. Basically I dial up and connect, and things work for 3-4 minutes and then it just stops for a minute or so. It does not disconnect. After that it will work at normal speed for 3-4 mins and then stop for another minute. I rang my ISP's helpline but they dont think that its their fault, they think its the modem's fault. There is no slowing down or anything, its just an abrupt stop. Any help would be appreciated. |

Retrains are caused by one of the modems (yours or ISP) losing ability to recognize/decode the transmission and doing new handshake like the one when you initially connect. Things I suggest: Check your modem's driver version, and see if you are using current/latest driver Make sure that you have selected the correct country in your modem setup. In some cases, retrains are caused by the modem connecting at a speed higher than that which can reliably be maintained - so forcing the modem to connect at a slower speed will reduce or eliminate retrains: try limiting maximum connect speed You can verify whether retrains is the issue by (temporarily) leaving the modem speaker on during your connection with init string (extra setting) of In some cases, other devices connected to the phone line can interfere with modem and cause retrains: disconnect all other things plugged into the phone line or try connecting the modem to the demarc to verify that this is not your problem Aloha!
