Hello,

I don't really understand how modem and dsl connections work and am not sure about how to ask this. Or even if this is the right forum to ask it in but I hope someone can please help me.

My info page says that I have AOpen FM56-SM Soft PCI Modem & AOpen Soft PCI Modem Enumerator. I do not use the computer to fax or make or receive calls.

I used to use dial-up but switched to a dsl connection and go through a router and it says Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter(NC100 v2) to connect to the router.
I thought that a modem was not used for dsl.

I found the modem log and this is part of it:

The log goes back to 08-04-2006 (after dsl was started). And every day is like this.

Is it normal for the modem to stay active like this with a dsl connection? Do I even need a modem now? Do I need to uninstall the modem?

Can someone please tell me does the dsl connection use the modem to connect? The other computer I set the dsl up on does not have a modem in it, but the same kind of Ethernet Adapter connected to the router and it connects ok.

Thank you for helping me,
Ninajb

You do not need the modem you are asking about for DSL. (DSL has a modem, but it is not in the PC, nor does the PC know about it, the PC uses Ethernet to connect to the DSL modem or router.)

You can uninstall the modem, but you don't have to.
As long as the modem is physically in your PC, and the driver for it remains, it will initialize when you start Windows and be available for use if you ever need to use it. It does no harm to keep it in/installed.

Thanks for answering me. Do you mind answering one more question? If a phone line is not hooked up to the phone place on the back of the computer (only the Ethernet plug is connected from the computer to the router and then line from the router goes to the wall phone jack) can the modem dial out or receive calls? Is it able to make a connection through the dsl?

Thank you,
ninajb

No, the dial-up modem would not be able to make or receive calls if it is not connected to a phone line.

You *can* use the Internet (via the DSL modem) to make or receive phone calls without having a phone line connected to the modem, using a VoIP service. In most cases, making or receiving calls to/from regular phones with VoIP involves subscription or additional charges. Like many phone/phone-related services, there is a lot of hype and hidden fees/charges from the vendors of these services.

Aloha! Richard.
