I tried to load the driver for conexant modem to Win 98 and the system recognised the modem after doing so .However the diagnosis details shows that "The modem is in use or off and check if it is properly connected" message.
However I become sucessful on another PC with the same procedure but with success.
Pls suggest why?

Try putting the modem in a different PCI slot.

Make sure that no other modems are installed in Windows on the machine you have trouble (Control Panel / System / Device Manager).
