I have an HP computer with a PCI Data Fax Softmodem with Smart CP..according to HP this is a V.92 modem but the modem on hold faeture is not supported. What I need to know is what is the proper procedure for selecting a new modem that will give me access to incoming phone calls while I am online with my dial up ISP. Would the external modem be easier to install then a internal one AND do I have to physically remove the existing modem from the pci slot and uninstall the drivers when I do go to install a different modem.
Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

What is the chipset for the modem supplied with the computer? What operating system? HP does not make modems, gets them from other suppliers, and in some cases supplies drivers/software that do not support all the modem capabilities (modem-on-hold) - so all you have to do is get a "generic" driver/modem-on-hold software for the modem and then you get all the capabilities of the modem.

If you get another modem - you do not have to uninstall the modem you already have as PC/OS supports multiple modems.

An external modem might be easier to "install", but it might be much more difficult to get it to actually work depending upon the type of modem/chipset/interface to computer.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks for the info...The OS is Windows XP media Center/Professional...I do know that the modem is manufactured by CXT (Conexant) But I do not know the chipset or how to find out. Sorry I am not very computer savvy.
I have ordered a external modem..US Robotics #5633B. Do you have any idea if this will work OK on my computer? If not, with the info that I have been able to give you what would you recommend I purchase.
Again thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated.
