What are my choices for an internal PCI hardware controller V.92/V.44 modem?

My very old V.90 Lucent controller modem recently died and I replaced it with an USR 5699B windows modem. Versus my old when connected it seems to pause more often. I would be downloading something and then it pauses for 10 seconds before the download starts up again. Not good if you are watching a real-time stock market quotes stream. It also seems to make me do more multiple attempts to dial-in. So much for trying soft modems. But internal PCI controller modems that run the latest V.92 and V.44 protocols don't seem to be in great supply.

In the "buying a 56k modem" page there is this statement that hardware modems have a 115.2K COM port speed limit. Is this still the case for internal "PCI" hardware modems? I never really did understand why a PCI device is even assigned a pseudo COM port.

Thanks for any replies.

So does anyone ever reply to these forums? Or is this Richard guy dead?

Anyway, my search for a V.92/V.44 internal PCI hardware modem found 1 modem, the Multitech Multimodem ZPX. Its rather expense. So does anyone knows how well this modem works?

Are you sure the Lucent was a hardware controller modem? There were very few of these (Venus chipset) - the controllerless (but not soft) Lucent Win Modem was way more popular.

In any event, the controllerless modems have basically disappeared as softmodems have taken over. You'd probably get decent results with an Agere (formerly Lucent) softmodem.

Internal PCI h/w controller modem - choices basically are the Multitech; USR Courier, or [old/used] USR Sportster. Since hardware controller modem uses real serial interface, the throughput will be limited by the UART (universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter) on the modem - and since these modems were for the most part designed long ago and aren't being updated.....

I'd suggest first try the Agere Softmodem.

Aloha! Richard.

Yes, I had a Venus chipset Lucent modem. I was really happy with it and so I never went to V.92 until it recently died.

The USR website only shows an external Courier modem. They do have the 5610c internal model, but that doesn't support V.44. So I guess there is only one V.92/V.44 internal PCI controller modem, the Multitech Multimodem ZPX?? Rather weird not to have more choices.

So for internal PCI modems the bottleneck is the UART. Is the UART bandwith have a fix limit of 115.2K? Or could Multitech designed a higher limit in their ZPX and still meet all the modem protocols?

And thanks for the replies.

Yes, the UART is the limit, and it is possible to use UART with higher-speed limit - I think the Multitech may have UART that supports at least 230.4kbps (although this is just from hazy memory - so you should try and get confirmation if you are going to go for it).

Aloha! Richard.

I ordered the Multitech. Hopfully they designed the modem to handle the highest possible burst rate a 56K phone line can produce. I settle for a modem as good as my old Lucent. Thanks for the info.
