I'm pulling my hair out trying to sort out all this technology. First I should ask if anyone is familiar with the Zoom 2949L external modem? This is the modem I'm currently using with Fax Talk Messenger Pro 7.5. Here's the situation:

I'm using the 2949L with the aforementioned software to handle all answering system/fax needs for my business. I also have my old old old Panasonic fax machine in the loop. So when someone calls, after the modem answers, I can press the monitor button on the fax machine to hear the message as it's being recorded. So everything works fine there. But now we want to get rid of the ancient fax machine in favor of a two handset cordless phone that I can answer from another room should I need to, and not have to run all the way into the room where the phone is. However, I simply cannot find a phone that has this monitor button feature.

So the next thought I had was to see if there is a way to make the multimedia speakers on the computer play the voicemail as it's being recorded. I can't even figure out if my modem supports that and if does, I don't know how to enable it.

I've been searching for several hours on the net and have found a few modems that say TAM (telephone answering machine) as a feature which requires a soundcard, which leads me to believe they are the ones I should be looking for.

Can anyone help me out here? I know there have to be more knowledgeable people out there than me on this subject!

Thanks in advance...

Whether you can monitor the call as it is happening via computer speakers is a function of the SOFTWARE - so you should ask the FaxTalk people or check the software settings/options.

However, any cordless speakerphone should give you the functionality to monitor the call - you put it on speakerphone with the mic muted.

Well it does have a screen calls feature, but the support said that it depends on the modem. But see, I don't want to hear the voice through the speaker on the modem, I'd ideally like to hear it through the multimedia speakers so it's nice and loud and clear. Are there not any modems that play the sound through the soundcard in the computer? What do those things mean when they say TAM which requires a soundcard?

TAM= telephone answering machine
If the modem has a line output, this output can be connected to sound card line input --- a 'Speakerphone' modem.

Can you by any chance tell me what modem has a line output? They're so hard to find these days...
