i have a conexant d850 56k v.9x DFVa modem. i just switched to a cable co. for phone support. in the last week my connection shows that i am connected, however, i cannot do anything. This happens shortly after i get on the internet to hours after i have logged on. when i check the phone line i hear a straight signal but not the changing signal that usually is heard. is it the modem or my phone co?

Cable company uses VoIP and doesn't provide a "normal" dial-tone line suitable for use with an analog modem.
Definitely phone company related ---- ask the cable company if you can use a dial-up modem with your cable phone service - I'd like to know what they tell you.

Aloha! Richard.
