I recently purchased an HP PC with Vista (PCI Soft modem), and my dial-up was working just fine. Then Earthlink decided they were going to disconnect the number I have been using. All number options caused my modem to disconnect. So, I looked at my old XP machine with a Lucent modem and used the same advanced properties setting I had to configure on that machine: AT&FX. It seems to be working on my HP/Vista PC just fine, but I am wondering if this fix is real or my non-disconnects just a coincidence, a possible potential problem for my new machine, etc.

If it works......

But, it's not something I would recommend doing as
AT&F
resets modem to factory defaults and overrides all the settings [that the modem is supposed to get if everything is installed correctly and the correct options for dialing a connection are selected]
the x sets the modem so that it does not detect dial tone (will dial blindly) and changes the way it reports the connection so that Windows doesn't get any correct info (what speed does Vista say you are connected at?)

If it works for you & you're happy, there's no real need to do anything; if it were I, I'd want to find out why it doesn't work and fix it "properly" - but with Vista, that's harder than ever to do.
You'd need to find out what DUNs error you're getting
www.modemsite.com/5k6/dunserror.asp
and examine modemlog
www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.asp

BTW- that initialization string is "bad" for XP and the Lucent modem as well.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks Richard. That string when applied to my XP machine came from the Earthlink reps to keep the modem connected, and the rep I spoke to about the Vista machine was under the impression that this new OS did not even allow such configurations (I found the place to apply the string on my own).

I have dropped the connection only once (coincidentally, this morning) since the reconfiguration, and so it seems to be doing what it needs to do, but I will look at the DUNS errors one of these days with the string taken out.

I think all these outfits (MS, computer manufacturers, and IPs) are in the process of driving us out of dial-up altogether, but since my only options (I live in the country) are mobile broadband and satellite, I will hold out as long as I can.

Thanks again for your insight.

Michael
