Then Earthlink decided they were going to disconnect the number I have been using. All number options caused my modem to disconnect. So, I looked at my old XP machine with a Lucent modem and used the same advanced properties setting I had to configure on that machine: AT&FX. It seems to be working on my HP/Vista PC just fine, but I am wondering if this fix is real or my non-disconnects just a coincidence, a possible potential problem for my new machine, etc. |

But, it's not something I would recommend doing as If it works for you & you're happy, there's no real need to do anything; if it were I, I'd want to find out why it doesn't work and fix it "properly" - but with Vista, that's harder than ever to do. BTW- that initialization string is "bad" for XP and the Lucent modem as well. Aloha! Richard. |
proeditor Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 11/7/2007 11:59:05 AM Thanks Richard. That string when applied to my XP machine came from the Earthlink reps to keep the modem connected, and the rep I spoke to about the Vista machine was under the impression that this new OS did not even allow such configurations (I found the place to apply the string on my own). I have dropped the connection only once (coincidentally, this morning) since the reconfiguration, and so it seems to be doing what it needs to do, but I will look at the DUNS errors one of these days with the string taken out. I think all these outfits (MS, computer manufacturers, and IPs) are in the process of driving us out of dial-up altogether, but since my only options (I live in the country) are mobile broadband and satellite, I will hold out as long as I can. Thanks again for your insight. Michael |
