I am trying to get my parents into the 21st century. They dont have high speed in the sticks where they live so dial-up is the only option. I am using a dell optiplex gx 270, 2.4 gig, 1gig ram, way too much for them, but it did not have a dial up modem, just Ethernet card. I had an old dell modem that I put in that worked awesome, picking up 26.4Kbps, but no caller id or name. I bought a generic v92 1646 lucent/agere and installed the drivers and it will tell if a call is coming in when offline without caller id or name, just says number N/A, and does nothing while online. Also only picking up 24.0Kbps. I am using Phonetray dialup v2.29 and my drivers are showing 5.125, and when I click on driver details, the first one check marked shows 8.28, and the second one check marked shows 5.126. I haven't worked with dial up modems in a long time, can someone refresh my memory and tell me what I am doing wrong and if I can get a little higher speed.
Thank You
Hank

For Agere (now LSI) modem you need
Driver version 8.30 - which you can download from Modemsite w/ a Premium Access subscription - it may also be available from other sites.

AND -Agere Modem-on-hold applet - also available from Modemsite w/ Premium Access subscription, and should have come with your modem. See:
www.modemsite.com/56k/ltwin7.asp

You also need call waiting AND call-waiting ID (caller id for call waiting) service from the phone company in order to be able to get informed of NAME and NUMBER of incoming call while you are online.

A rate of 24 or 26.4kbps is a sign that the phone company may be using a subscriber loop carrier system (SLC) that limits modem performance. There is a lot of info on this is the Technical and Troubleshooting sections of Modemsite
