Check in device manager under ports that the modem is on.

Post a modem log to see if the change in the port speed was made.Did you change it to 115,200? Also go to hyperterminal.
Type in AT enter, then AT&f enter, then ATI0 to ATI6 to get the modem info.Do you know if this is a pci or isa modem?

ATI0 Reports product code(e.g.,"33600").
ATI1 Reports a precomputed checksum (normally "255").
ATI2 Reports "OK".
ATI3 Reports firmware revision (VX.XXX)
ATI4 Reports OEM defined identifier string
ATI5 Reports Country Code parameter
ATI6 Reports modem data pump model and internal code revision

How is the modem listed in the connect using window in modem properties?

In hyperterminal just do one at a time. ATI0 enter then do ati1 enter...ect. I think you have the wrong drivers for this modem. This is a pci modem you will not show com port in the device manager for this modem. Showing connection.
Connection established at 115200bps this not correct, this is the port speed.Put W2 in extra settings.

I'm sorry, I'm totally confused as to what goes where now.. I've been in and out of all these windows so many times, some seem to have the same settings in other places. *sob*

I've got the drivers you pointed me too. Perhaps you could walk me through what setting I should have where and how to install these drivers as i've done different things for different ones..and I'm lost now

This is what we were looking for MD5628D-L-A to find out what modem you have. Also note you have the country selection set for USA 1
You are getting these setting because of the wrong drivers installed.

02-16-2004 16:47:20.716 - Data compression off or unknown.

Not to worry we will get this worked out.I was letting know that Connection established at 115200bps this not correct, this is the port speed This is from nothing you have done, wrong file will cause this. Some notes about this modem chipset.
Cirrus Logic spun all its modem chipsets off as an independant company called Ambient Technologies. Ambient introduced this chipset as a replacement for the original Cirrus Logic MD562X controllerless chipset. Ambient became part of Intel, and Intel now no longer uses the Ambient name. Intel continues to support this chipset

Model:E-Tech PCI56AVP faxmodem (model A)

Note the model MD5628D-L-A I think this would be driver you need.
http://www.e-tech.nu/Support_Detail/faxmodem/e

Click on Start button at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
Go to Settings and then select Control Panel.
Double-click on the icon called Phone and Modem Options.
Click on the Modem tab at the top of the windows.High light the modem click remove.Remove the dialup connection you made in the dial up folder. Check the add/remove program if there are any modem drivers listed there, remove.
Reboot and windows should find new hardware if you have drivers on floppy point it to the floppy drive. If windows will not detect modem on reboot install the way the link below.

Just one question Charles, before I go ahead.

In the installing your Modem instructions...Regarding 'Select the port where your modem is connected to'! The diagram shows COM1 & COM2 .. mine is COM3 but never shows up when you look at Ports in Device Manager!

What do I do in this case ?

Thank you for being patient.

When you reboot and windows finds new hardware and you install the drivers windows should put the modem back to port 3.If you are not using com1 com2 for other devices I would disable them in the device manager. The page that I listed is just for reference it should show com3 on your pc.Were did you get the drivers that you installed the first time? You will not see the port in device manager because it makes a software port, the ports you see in the device manager are hardware ports. This is why your modem is being installed on com3.
