Checked BIOS and option not available. Under Device Manager/com1/resources is a check box for Use automatic settings. Unchecked that but didn't see any improvement. Using XP here so may have to await some upgrades. Thanks for help.

What options do you have in the BIOS Setup for the Serial Ports other than AUTO?

Might also try the modem in a different slot on the motherboard.

BIOS options Com port

3F8/IRQ4 (current one)
2F8/IRQ3
3E8/IRQ4
2E8/IRQ3
AUTO
DISABLE

As long as I have two modems listed on Com1, one gets marked as "not present" and am able to use the other. Same thing on Com 2. Internal LT Win Modem is on Com3 and I never use.

Lucent modem? Didn't say anything about another modem installed.

Ok, got a Lucent modem on Com3, trying to install the USR (internal PnP?) modem, then you need to have Serial Port 1 in the BIOS Setup set to 3F8/IRQ4 (3F8 is the same as 03F8, this will be Com1 under Windows) and Serial Port 2 disabled. The USR modem should then install on Com2.

Might note that most internal PnP modems create their own virtual com ports and do not use the hardware ports (Com1 and Com2 listed under Ports in the Device Manager).
