Your connection SNR (dB) 37 Speed 31200/28800
37-40 33,600-56,000 (a little unstable at high speeds)
34-37 31,200-33,600
SNR = Signal to Noise Ratio
Look like there is some line noise problem here. Note your SNR 37 with the table above to your connection speed.
Overall this connection at this speed looks stable.
This page will give some info you can check it to.
http://www.modemhelp.net/linenoise/usr/ati6.shtml

This also could be a OS problem with the way it handles the inf file. Also might check if there is a bios update for this pc for running 2000 and sevice packs for 2000 itself.
Might try this string to see if the modem will take it

&U22&N38

Connect between 34666bps to 56000 The modem may not connect at this speed so just remove the string if it will not. If the modem connects check again with ati11

Also see in the modem log that the default modem string
&H2&I2&R1 set the modem FlowControl_Soft also shows in the inf file.

Might change to &H1&R2&I0
which would set the modem to FlowControl_Hardware
try the string above by itself and check connection.

Went back and check the ATY11 and everything looks great for the phone.Showing only 1 A/D conversion . Might try a shorter than 16 foot phone cord.

I have tried the &U22&N38 setting. My modem redialed 15 times (I set it) and every time handshake ended up with one long tone that lasted 2-3 minutes after which modem reset itself and redialed again. How to get rid of the noise. Do I need to hammer my local BellSouth a little bit?
I built this computer using brand new most recent Asus P4T533C motherboard, so I am not sure that it will post new BIOS in near future. One thing I am concerned about is I tried this modem (2976) first, then removed it and installed another modem (5610), then removed it and installed 5610B and then I removed it and installed 2976 back again with new drivers. How to check to make sure my OS (Win 2000) is not confused and it uses the right settings from inf file?
BTW, I tested this line with my IBM laptop that has built-in software DSP modem and it connected at 44000 and the connection is very stable. I tried it for hours. Maybe I should switch to a software modem?
What makes line noisy? Can it be a poor connection to a phone pole or a connection box?
Thank you, for your help!

Go to safe mode amd check the device manager for more than one modem listed.Just reboot and tape the f8 key and pick safe mode.Check the add/remove program for any modem drivers that are not for this modem.Check the Windows\Inf for other files to other modems. I would not delete them but give them a name change so if there is trouble you can rename to the correct one or save them to put back if there is a problem.Did you try the string &H1&R2&I0

If the other modem connected at that speed I would not worry about the phone line. This is a older modem and drivers and there will be no more driver update for it. Going to a newer modem with updated drivers may help and you will get more support and upgrades to drivers. If your ever want to upgrade to V92 you will have to update the modem. Why 2000 and not XP?

Windows\inf folder. If you don't see the inf folder then your folder options are set to hide that folder. To see that folder go to View/Folder Options/View
In there make sure that the show all files option is set.
You must edit using notepad.exe each .inf file and look for a reference to other modem that was installed. If there is a reference to them then remove that file.

But we do know that the modem is working with the added modem strings. That is why I gave you the string above. It is set on to high of connect speed for the modem to connect. If it did not use the string then we would know there was a problem.
The command to lower the modem speaker would be L1M1

Yours is set now to L2M1 L2: Selects medium volume (default).

I don’t like XP. It has a lot of built-in spyware. I use my computer to play games as well as to develop software using C++ and VB. I probably did not make myself clear: the reason I have installed the relatively old modem is because it is able to keep connection at lower rate. When I upgrade my computer from PIII 550 MHz to P4 2.4 GHz, the new motherboard did not have an OSA slot. My old OSA-slot-based URS modem worked wonderfully but I had to give it away to my friend. I purchased and installed the best and most expensive USR 5610B (performance pro) modem. It connects at 51Kps or 49Kps but very often goes into “freeze” mode. It shows that it is connected but not a single byte goes in or out. The only way to do something with connection is to manually close it and redial. I though it was defective and I replace it with the new one. Same result. On this forum I learned that V92 USR modems have problem with firmware. Then, I purchased 5610 which is V90. It connects at 45 but sometimes (not as often as V92) also goes in the “freeze” mode. I am taking Masters Degree classes on-line and it is very important for me to keep connection alive. Then I asked my friend (the same one who got my modem) to give me his PCI 2976 modem to see if it works. I still think that my line (SNR in particular) causes newer modems to freeze and the old one to connect at low speed. At my friends house it used to connect at 44 Kbs.

BTW, I found that one of phone lines that connect to my phone pole has a little shortage. It showed some resistance when I checked it with Ohmmeter when phone was unplugged.
Could it cause voltage drop or bad SNR? I

If you do not have a problem with the lower speed then I would limit the connection speed to the modem that is stable. Some modem will try to connect at the highest it can even that the line can not support it,then you will get the stalls. If you want a good stable speed and not much on connection speed at the time I would use V34.V34 would be best for gaming.Might try the newer modem at V90 but limit the connect speed down untill you get the stable speed the line can handle.Loose and dirty connections are a big problem, log phone cords can also if near any power supply.Other phones or devices on the same can also be a problem. Xp is a good OS but you have to clean out all the eye candy and disable all the background junk.

It is funny but I have decided to test different brand and type of modem. I bought Broadxent (by Creative) DSI V.92 modem and installed it. It works like a dream. It connects at 53.2 every time. Even I noticed actual download speed is 45.5 when downloading a big files but it still very good. But most important, the connection is stable. So far my modem have never got stalled. So much for the 29 doll. modem from Wal-Mart. After 3 different USR modems.
Modem is DSI type. What does it mean? Digital Signal Interface? I hope this is not a HSP type. My CPU load is between 3 - 29 percents and it is goes up and down every second. I have 2.4 GHz processor.
----------------------------------------
What "eye candies" in particular I have to disable? The same question about "background junk." How to make sure that I disabled all "unnecessary" spy stuff and left all important one (for regular use)
and left all other?
