This also could be a problem with IE,might go to the add remove program and try the IE fix tool. Might also try this.

Could also have a Winsock2 corruption,this also could help other in slow connection.If you have auto updates on might set it to prompt for updates.Check your Email settings also that it is not set to disconnect after send and receive.

Thanks to all for sticking with me on this. Problem is still there but there is a twist...Here is latest:

1. Had already re-routed phoneline away from surge protector and is connected to phone jack directly. Did that pretty much at the begining of my troubleshooting efforts.

2. I can connect, hold a connection and even bring up web pages with one of my ISP accounts (CoreComm/Voyager) BUT it is really slow on the draw. The Earthlink account still allows me to connect but I cannot see web pages and connection drops within 2 mins.

3. Both connectoids are configured the same and both are the same as what my laptop show (which works just fine on both ISP accounts).

4. I believe I've turned off auto updates a while ago but will check.

Stay tuned as I will try the other suggestions.

This modem uses the Conexant chipset and should support the +MS command. If the problem is with all modem installs then I would think it is the PC not the modem. If the pc was on when it was hit could have damage something else. I would also end task all programs that are running in the background before connecting. Do you show any com ports in the device manager? Look for any fax or other programs that would use the modem and end task them all,connect. Might also use the command AT&f or AT&Z in hyperterminal to reset the modem to the defaults. Note the retrains of this modem. Carrier Retrain requests granted: 28 Can you connect to the telco box outside? Have you had the phone company check the outside line or telco box? This box has buses in it and have them check the line voltage.If you can disconnect everything form the phone lines and try connection. If you have more than one connectoid in the dial up folder remove them all and make a new one.
Would not hurt to check this system with adaware,spybot and a virus checker.

Might also run Msconfig.exe and look in the startup folder for any program that might be holding the modem.

ok, sorry for delay. Able to connect direct to telco box...same problem...called telco and insisted on a line check. They did and rolled a truck out...no word yet on results...still having same problem...can connect on one ISP yet very slow and need to repeat requests for web pages. Ran spybot and stinger.

IPConfig command give me DNS IPs and etc...yet ping times out. All quite frustrating...finally decided it shouldn't be so hard when symptoms on laptop are not the same...when all else seems to be failing perhaps the simplest reason exposes itself...therefore I have begun to believe there is a motherboard issue.

I've made the claim on insurance and will be getting a new box.

I may just go ahead and re-install everything and see if a clean sweep doesn't resolve the issue..but have my doubts.

Yes sometimes that is what it take when everything else will not work. Do you have a restore point back before the lightning strike.

Actually everything else with the box works fine...except holding a decent connection to the internet. I can use all apps, see all data files (across two HDs) and etc. I have already archived all data files. Its as if the lighting only wanted to keep me from getting online ;)

Should be easy to xfer data to new PC. I have about $750 to spend...and recommendations on a new box?
