I was considering a USR V92 external modem, but now I may reconsider. What is better than USR?

Zoom makes good products.

You may want to try them. But, make sure you get a hardware based modem, check the specifications.

You could also try Ebay for a used USR Courier modem if you like.

I hope this helps you out.

Does anyone have any experience with the USR5610B?
This modem is said to be V92 and Win XP ready.

Do not apply the upgrade for the Performance Pro modem.

If it is the only modem you have you won't be able to dail-up.

Can anyone explain this? I used to connect at a very high speed with a 56k modem but now i connect a numbers like 19200 and 21600 instead of 49333 or 50600, what could be wrong? Also when i connect the noise goes throuh two of the same patterns of noise, its twice as long as it used to be.

I know this may be a bit late, but I just stumbled on this thread today. I have two questions:
1) I have exactly the same problem as Coyote and timoch; which is my modem 'sleeping'. I think this is caused by my OS (WinME), because I dual-boot with Win2K and it never 'sleeps'. This also happened after I formatted my PC. When it does 'sleep', NOTHING works: even the DOS-based ping doesn't respond. Why does this happen? I've tried everything, including reinstalling modem, network protocol... you get the picture. It's extremely annoying. Somebody, please, help me (or us!).
2) About the v.92 upgrade, does anybody know the status of USR modems made for the Asia-Pacific region? I'm from Malaysia, and my model # is: 451663-02. It's nowhere close to the models listed in the upgrade page. Argh. Have they forgotten about their AP customers?

modem is trying to resend. Check modem properties for connect speed settings.

No guarentee's this will work though from every thing I have read through out this forum, seems to have positive results. To bad usr's crappy quality control didn't catch this problem.

Just installed USR5610B under Win XP with no problems.
I also have a dedicated Cat5 wire from my modem to my telephone interface, (on the outside of my house).

I also had the garbled noise problem and found a easy fix. You see I have 2 computers in my house on 2 different phone lines. If my step daughter gos online befor me (Supra express max USB modem)and I try to connect after she is online I get that garbled water frying sound and can't connect. So all I have to do is go online first or wait. I hope this helps and I have no Idea how this problem happens or what makes it happen.

Sounds like you're getting crosstalk on your lines.

I too have had this problem now for several months. The USR Sportster 005686-03 attached to my external 3Com CMX one-way cable modem (the 56k provides upstream transfer) will crack and pop loudly over a faint dial tone when attempting to connect. Mysteriously it does seem to occur more frequently at night...otherwise no discernible pattern.

Happily, however, after discovering this topic at Forum 56, my problem is now solved. The posts suggesting the ceiling fan as culprit tipped me off, and as it turns out, the halogen lamp in the next room was the source of the interference.

What a rush to finally have this fixed.

I have been fighting this modem for over a year now going from being dropped for a few seconds playing games to extreme disconnects. I have currently had no drops and only 1 disconnect in over 20 hours of being online after I installed a RF Filter (11 dollars at Radio Shack). I am no expert and can't say for sure that this is what did it but I'm a happy gamer now....

I have made some tests since my first post here in november. I have tried another Fax Modem 5686-03 I had at the office and got the same problem. I have checked everything possible and it would not work. As soon as I typed ATH1 from HyperTerminal, I would get the garbling noise.

Then, I tried a RF filter and I noticed a change in the noise; I could now faintly hear the dial tone but it was still not enough. So I decided to add another filter. They are ferrite core and were laying somewhere at the office. They are 1 inch long by 0.5 inch diameter cylinder and the modem cable goes through it twice. Then there is a 2 parts plastic cover for aesthetic (it looks a lot like that thing at the end of your video cable, which is a RF filter by the way).
It is working now!

So I recommend to all those who experience the GARBLING NOISE problem to try the Radio Shack RF filter mentioned in other posts or any similar devices. It is working.

I still do not understand how it works and why USR has not spotted that problem and is not mentionning anything on their web site.

I have the 5610a and it's working great. I flashed it to the (b) vsersion, and it's fine. Actually it connects faster now, and none of my connections have been dropped either. I'm just curious to know if the 5610a is basicaly the same card as the 5610b? Are there only differences the ROM revision and date? I emailed these questions along with one inquiring the absence of v.44, and have had no reply.

Thanks guys for any help!

Bud:)
