error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/21/2004 8:56:51 PM I have a USR 56K external modem 5603 flashed to v.92 using the latest firmware 5.4.62 found on www.usr.com just today. My problem is that I can only stay connected 10-12 minutes before I'm disconnected. I have already tried disabling 56k entirely, and using S10=60, and I get the following. I have no idea why the modem might be unable to retrain. How do I fix this one? I've also included the diagnostic from a "typical" 56k connection (usually 45333-52000) below this one. ati6 Chars sent 41278 Chars Received 299955 Retrains Requested 0 Retrains Granted 0 Data Compression V42BIS 2048/32 Disconnect Reason is Unable to Retrain OK

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 8:15:53 AM Could be the phone line, the ISP modem you are calling, or your modem. Suggest - enable your modem speaker on all the time to hear what's going on - add m2 to extra settings www.modemsite.com/56k/initmagic.asp This page has some audio of what modem should sound like, retrains, etc. Aloha! Richard. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 9:06:23 AM Might also try removing everything from the phone lines except the modem, try connection again. |
error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 9:38:38 AM Thanks for the suggestions. I have already tried 3 dialup access numbers and get the same on each of them. In addition I turned on the speaker but I don't seem to hear anything out of the ordinary during the connection. When it disconnects, it just suddenly gives me a single long tone for a few seconds, before the modem finally gives up. I also don't have anything on the phone line other than the modem, and all the I/W is new. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 9:41:57 AM Could you post a modem log and might try S10=200S25=100 Have you tried other jack? remove everything from there jacks in the house, might also connect right to the telco box out side. What OS? Check what is running the background when this happens like any auto updates. If you have a network card on this pc and not using it disable it in the device manager. http://www.modemhelp.net/linenoise/usr/ati11.shtml Edited by - charles on 6/22/2004 9:57:58 AM |
error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 2:53:17 PM I'm using Linux 2.6.7 and pppd 2.4.2. There is no difference using your suggested init string, and the logs really give me nothing useful to go on. Jun 22 16:14:06 roam pppd[18212]: pppd 2.4.2 started by root, uid 0

error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 4:09:15 PM No, I just posted the wrong number, sorry. It is a 5686-03 (00568603). |

error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 4:57:07 PM I don't know why you couldn't find it. I can go to the site and get it every time; just select 005686-03 from the drop down list and I wind up here: http://www.usr.com/v92/v-upgrade.asp?patch=5686 and there at the bottom is the firmware. Anyway, that's been done already. Besides, the firmware is not my problem; the disconnects are my problem. |
error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 5:31:34 PM The plot thickens... I just got done reviewing my system logs for the last day, and I discovered that a connection I made around 5am this morning lasted well in excess of four hours! (I had to leave for work at 6am and I have a weather icon that updates every 10 minutes.) Jun 22 05:21:42 roam pppd[16579]: Starting link I'm going to let this thing autodial all night and see if maybe it's related to the time-of-day. And this weekend maybe I'll just stay up all night and look at it. |

error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/22/2004 5:52:14 PM It's definitely the right firmware; the flash utility included identifies it as a match. This log from yesterday: root@roam ~ # tar -zxvf Linux-5686.03.04.05.D.E-v5.4.62.tar.gz This may take a few minutes...... |
error Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 6/23/2004 1:53:09 PM I called the ISP up and it turns out they thought I was some kind of "heavy user" and so they were disconnecting my connection after a few minutes every time. Everything's fine now. Thanks again for your help and sorry to bother you all with something which turned out to be my fault anyway. |
