cbyrdjr Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 12/28/2000 9:58:59 AM I'm getting poor throughput. On smaller downloads I can get around 4.4k per sec, but on larger (and longer) downloads I often top out at around 3.4. I've monitored the throughput using netstats, and I can see it spiking to 5.6 and higher, only to drop down to 2.6 then back up again. I'm also getting horrible gaming lag. The connection will be solid for a little while, then turn to crap with lots of packet loss etc, then it clears up again for a bit. Here's the results of aty11: Freq Level (dB) 150 23

SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 12/28/2000 10:21:28 AM I wish I had your aty11 - they're outstanding. For games, try s32=98 in extra settings under modem properties. It will cap you at 28.8, but it's better for games. This site has a piece on gamers' lag. Otherwise, your problems are really the result of the 56k world. Only alternatives are DSL, Cable, ISDN or T1. |
cbyrdjr Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 12/28/2000 11:33:57 AM Yeah, that's what I don't get really. If I plug a real phone (not cordless) into this line and take it off hook and dial 1 to silence the dialtone, the line sounds clear. The results of the modem diagnostics seem to suggest that something is funny though. ATy11 looks great, but for some reason I'm seeing what looks like line trouble to me. Also, I read somewhere on this site that the last set of numbers in this line Status : uu,5,12N,12.3,-0,0N,000,41.0,30.2 should be in the mid teens at the highest, while mine is 30.2 :( |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 1/2/2001 2:20:35 PM One thing I notice - your near echo loss at 2db may be a problem; the higher the number, the greater the loss at your line card hybrid; 2db is not much loss - the effect being that much of the signal your modem transmits is echo'ed back to the modem which must separate that from the data actually sent by your ISP; I would think you would 'hear' that on your line in voice calls by noticing that the echo of what you speak in the receiver is louder than with "normal" lines. Aloha, |
cbyrdjr Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 1/2/2001 3:02:12 PM Thanks for the info. Honestly I've never used the line for a normal voice call with a "real" telephone. The only time a phone has been plugged into it was to test for noise. I'll try a regular phone and see if I notice any unusual loudness or echo. Is there anything at all that I can do about it if I do hear it? I know the phone company has been pulling new cable like they're gonna stop making the stuff. They've rewired the whole town. I'm wondering if some of the new equipment they've put in just doesn't like me One more thing, I read something either here or on another site about being "too close" to the C.O. and the line being "too hot". Well, you don't get much closer to the C.O. than me, I'm 4 blocks away from it in a very rural town (I'm told less than 1100 feet). Could that be part of the problem, along with the brand new cabling etc that has been done here in the last year? |
cbyrdjr Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 1/4/2001 5:03:38 AM Ok, I plugged a phone into the line and tested it with a few voice calls. I did notice some echo, but not much more than I get with my other line. I heard no static on the line at all. The telco recently replaced the lines in my neighborhood, and also the line feeding my demarc box from the pole. Do you think it's worth the trouble to try to get the telco to test it? |
SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 1/4/2001 6:59:16 PM Ask telco to run a transmission & noise test from your dmarc. Being so close, you don't have any loss in your line, making it too hot. They can, at no charge, place a unit in the office and a small one at dmarc to "add loss" to your line. Depending on your telco and location, good luck. If you're in a rural area, there may be some quizzical looks from telco when you ask for the test and fix. I wouldn't mention the modem just yet - tell 'em there's an echo on your line, as you said. Most telcos are bound by certain standards placed by state utility commissions. They should run the test and give you a copy of the readings. I do it regularly. cbyrdjr Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 1/9/2001 1:06:09 PM Well, the telco came out and performed a test on my line while I wasn't there . Of course they found no noise on the line, even though I wasn't complaining about noise. Thanks for your help anyway, but I think I'm stuck until we get cable or dsl...which is going to be just after hell freezes over. |
cbyrdjr Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 1/9/2001 5:48:50 PM One last update for this thread I guess. I re-installed a LT winmodem I had laying around and it seems to be more stable than my USR. Initial connection speeds are the same, but my download rates seem to be better, and the gaming lag has subsided quite a bit. Just shows you you can never tell I guess. While still not a perfect connection, it's better than what I had. |
