dollpie Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 8/25/2001 8:51:37 PM I use win 98 and have us robotics winmodem. I can connect to the internet but the browser won't show any pages. The strange thing is I have a very old version of Juno on my computer and that works. When I try to use netscape I recieve a network socket error. What on earth is going on? :( I already tried lots of suggestions including reinstalling etc.. I'd appreciate some help. Thanks! |

SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 8/26/2001 4:48:51 PM Used any proxy servers or "speed up your internet connection" type software? Check basic settings first: http://www.geocities.com/fernaldus/settings.html Edited by - SARGE on 8/26/01 4:53:40 PM |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 8/26/2001 9:03:37 PM Sounds like networking not installed or setyup properly; check the DUNS connectoid www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.htm If OK, unisntall Dial-up networking; then re-install. Aloha, |
dollpie Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 8/31/2001 9:52:23 PM Thanks for all the advice. I did try all the suggestions and still nothing. The modem does connect to the ISP and I can see that it does send data just doesn't receive it. I'm about to toss the whole thing out the window. Any last ditch efforts? |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 8/31/2001 10:38:27 PM Start, Find, Files or Folders, search for winsock.dll, there should be only one in the Windows or Windows\System directory. Rename all other to winsock.bak. Also search for a Host file, (no extension, not host.sam), rename it to host.bak if found. kltye Tl Posts: 19 Malaysia | Posted - 9/10/2001 7:08:15 AM Well, this is a long shot, but do you have any internet access monitoring software installed? Such as the ones that filter adds and popups? Or maybe software that guards internet access for children? I've used software like that before and messed up my internet connection. Uninstalling helped. |
dollpie Tl Posts: 4 USA | Posted - 9/10/2001 7:46:13 PM Hello everyone, Thanks for all your replies. Out of desperation and after trying everyone's suggestions, I did a clean boot and installed Windows Me. I lost some information but it did seem to fix the internet problem. So now I'm busy reinstalling all my missing information. This is a drastic move that I would not recommend. Thanks again! |
damc Tl Posts: 1 USA | Posted - 9/17/2001 3:28:12 PM WinME seems to have that problem more often than any other version of Windows. http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=kb;en-us;Q274498 |
nokomis Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 10/17/2001 3:58:35 AM Have same problem here after I installed WinXP. Seems to require a reboot. Other times without a reboot the modem goes "not present" |
nokomis Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 10/17/2001 5:42:51 AM Should clarify a bit. Hook up to internet fine on first bootup in morning. Second time I try to hookup I get no pages at all, even tho I hookup fine. If I turn off computer without shutting down power to external modem, it comes up "not present" in Control Panel" I click ADD and it looks but finds nothing so I click Cancel and then modem pops back in on Com1. So I always power down the modem now. Have latest software from USR. Maybe Com1 problem? |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 10/17/2001 8:25:20 PM If the modem connects to the ISP but you just can't browse or download then it's not a modem problem, your problem is with DUN (Dial-Up Networking). The modem just transfers data, it's up to DUN to tell the modem to send and receive the data. Check your BIOS Setup, if Serial Port 1 and 2 are set to AUTO then change them to 03F8/IRQ4 (Com1) and 02F8/IRQ3 (Com2)respectively. See if that helps with Windows 'finding' the modem. |
nokomis Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 10/18/2001 3:12:30 AM Thanks for tip Bob. Seem to have better luck if I add modem a second time as Com1 modem #2. Then modem #1 is "not present" and modem #2 works okay. Will check out those settings. |
nokomis Tl Posts: 12 | Posted - 10/18/2001 5:41:14 AM My settings are as you indicated: Com 1 03F8 - 03FF IRQ 4 Set to Auto. All works fine with modem installed twice. |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 10/18/2001 5:35:41 PM I'd suggest that the Serial Ports should NOT be set to AUTO in the BIOS Setup, they should be manually set to 03F8/IRQ4 and 02F8/IRQ3 in the BIOS Setup. But, if you're satified with the way the modem is working at present then that's fine. |
