Would point to a phone line problem or possibly defective part on the line side of the modem. What's the post call diagnostics look like for one of the other modems that's getting the 52000bps connection? |
owensmorgan Tl Posts: 11 United Kingdom | Posted - 11/3/2001 7:21:14 AM hi.. im the same person as the sm56 & olinet modem..ive got 3 modems and not happy with any. 2 too slow...1 thats very fast and dissconnects. my prioroty is this usr at the moment. as youve seen my phone line is fine. could it be the connections on the modem. or is their a software problem? check back here for info on my phone line.. thanks. |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 11/4/2001 11:35:41 AM Different modems handle the phone line quality differently and it's hard to compare the TX/RX signal levels and S/N Ratio reported by different type modems (chipsets) but the low S/N Ratio seems to be common between the USR and the Olitec modem so this would still indicate a line problem. Have you tried each modem on a different phone line that you know someone gets good stable connections on to see if the modem's connect any better/same/worse? |

Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 11/7/2001 9:00:53 PM Well, other than a possibly failing modem the only other item I see in the diagnosics is the "Roundtrip Delay (msec) 15" which puts you a pretty good distance from your ISP (my ISP is about 8 miles away and my roundtrip delay is 4.750 msec. Might try dialing into a local ISP using Hyperterminal (just don't try to logon) to see if it connects any differently. See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal. And http://modemsite.com/56k/usehyper.htm for using Hyperterminal to dial into other ISPs. |
