I bought a second user 3com US robotics 56k voice winmodem internal PCI DFV at a computer fair.
fFor the life in me I cant sort out the model number yet. Anyway I believe that I have managed to download some suitable drivers, which initialy appear to install and connect the modem into my PC. But I have not been able to connect 'on-line'. I have gleaned the possibility that the cord (lead) that connects the 3com modem to to the telephone jack (wall socket) is not the same as the one used by my HCF modem !?
Something to do with twisted wires ? Have you any ideas, I have only seen them advertised, but no explanation as to which modems they are used for.
I am just about to use hyperterminal and modemchk to test the modem inteernaly, but using my HFC cord I have not been able to recognize a telephone dial tone.

Phone cords are standard - take only 2 wire - the middle 2 in a modular plug;

A Winmodem requires OS & Modem-specific drivers; a USR Winmodem can be either retail or OEM; if it is OEM, you may not be able to get support or drivers from 3Com/USR - only from the OEM (which you may or may not be able to identify).

Bottom line: I would never buy a USR product that doesn't have all documentation/disk/drivers with it.

Note: Are you trying to run 2 Winmodems in same machine? Cannot [easily] do this.

Aloha,
Richard
