| kodoku Tl Posts: 3 | Posted - 10/8/2000 7:49:05 AM    My modem, a USR 5690 56k PCI Faxmodem, is a really solid piece of hardware. I experience few disconnects, except on one type of occasion, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why it's happening. For example, I can successfully press submit buttons at forums such as this one without a disconnect, but, if you're familiar with an on-line HTML editor's interface, in which you have to press a "save" button on a form to save your work, my modem disconnects. This also happens when I attempt to upload large files via FTP. Sometimes the file will reach a certain point in the uploading process (such as 93%) and then the modem will not transfer anymore data, and eventually disconnect me. This problem is maddening. My modem is excellent in speed and uploading small things, but not being able to use save forms is driving me crazy, especially since I operate web sites that require me to use similar online editors. Could this be fixed with an init string, or some conflict with the modem's software? I'm really not sure if this is the modem's fault, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

The problem has apparently been acknowledged by 3Com. But so far there is no fix. The author of this post may have more information for you. He may post under more than one userid; at least Deja's Author listing for him may be incomplete since I saw another more complete post about the class action law suit but now have lost it. Look for postings by Ken Jones in this thread I have bracketed the URL by <> so you can get the whole URL if necessary. However, normally it is safe to chop Deja's URLs after the AN=, in this case starting with &search. Also you may have to replace the domain name portion with www.deja.com</A>;. A keyword phrase that may get you into another thread that he participated in is "keypress abort". Apparently that is what the 5690 shows for the disconnect reason. HTH

Although this is a couple weeks up the road, I realize that some of the problems experienced by the postees at those links were not entirely shared by me. I did use the fix though and set it to s12=10. Results thus far have been entirely successful. I also decided to try disabling the escape code, and proceeded to test by uploading an mp3 via FTP. By doing so, it yeilded the same results as before I added the first code. The only problems I've been experiencing of late now, is not uploading. In fact, I'm again unsure if it's my modem at all. Recently, I've been trying to d/l Real Video, and the download says it's completed at varying degrees, when in fact it is not. I blame this more on the server I'm downloading from, for I have downloaded other large files (RVs, mp3s) without a hitch... SO I'm led to believe that it's not my setup. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for the tips! |
