I am running a USR 56k external voice modem (Asian version). My problem: While surfing, my modem suddenly "resets", that is, turns off for a second, then comes back on. It looks exactly like the power was turned off for a while, then back on. When I enter diagnostic commands (ATI6, I7 and Y11), it appears that the modem had lost the info, apparently due to a power loss. This doesn't happens all the time, only sometimes, and usually happens within the first 5-10 minutes after the call is connected.
Could this be due to line errors? I only experienced this recently; it could also be due to lightning since I live in a tropical climate. However, I am careful to unplug my modem from the phone line after using it.
Normally, my modem is rather stable, with retrains being infrequent. I have also limited my connect speed to about 40,000 bps.
I hope someone can help me with my problem. I'm using Win ME, PII 300MHz, 160MB RAM, 440LX m/board. Thanks in adavance.

Well, I've found out the cause of my problem. I left my modem's speaker on (m2) even after connect. Apparently, just before my modem mysteriously "resets", it will retrain. Unfortunately, due to my command string (at&n27), the modem will hang up if the speed specified earlier is not met. I have experienced this before, but only when I had specified a MINIMUM connect speed that could not be met by my ISP. Then my modem will just "reset" itself. This is really weird. I thought by limiting my connection speed will result in more stable connections, but I never realised it would cause this problem.

I think if you set a range of acceptable rates
(&U## &N##) you may be able to limit your speed and avoid disconnection on retrain.
