I've tried putting a USR Sportster 33600 Winmodem (flash upgraded to V90) in my old 486 system. Every time a dial up connection is made (using Win 95B) the connection icon appears in the system tray and then immediately disconnects.

This is what the modemlog shows:05-07-2000 20:04:57.95 - Recv: <cr><lf>CONNECT
41333/ARQ/x2/LAPM/V42BIS<cr><lf>
05-07-2000 20:04:57.95 - Interpreted response: Connect
05-07-2000 20:04:57.95 - Connection established at 41333bps.
05-07-2000 20:04:57.95 - Error-control on.
05-07-2000 20:04:57.95 - Data compression on.
05-07-2000 20:04:58.09 - 115200,N,8,1
05-07-2000 20:05:04.94 - Remote modem hung up.
05-07-2000 20:05:04.96 - Recv: <cr><lf>NO CARRIER<cr><lf>
05-07-2000 20:05:04.97 - Interpreted response: No Carrier
05-07-2000 20:05:05.01 - Hanging up the modem.

I tried a different 56K (X2) modem but got the same thing. USR/Gateway/Microsoft all blame someone else & have been no help at all (gee!). My laptop connects OK on the same line so I don't think it's that.

Any suggestion at all??

Forget x2 - which is what you are connecting at. Connect with V90.
If your provider supports x2 and not V90, find a new provider.
If you are using a string to force x2 in lieu of V90, get rid of it.
If you can't do V90, that would be why x2 connects at a poor 41k, and doesn't work.
The i6/i11/y11 screens from a V90 connect would be helpful in diagnosis.
