okay, this question may sound stupid, but anyway. I was wondering whether it makes a difference how long the extension cable between the modem and phone plug is. I think that I've read in a different context that the cable should be as short as possible to get best speeds. It's just cause I was thinking about moving the computer to a different room, and there the phone plug is further away from the desk (no way to change that). I'm using a normal 56k V.90 modem and there are no other devices (like phone or fax) plugged into the modem.

In most cases, the length will have zero effect on your connection.
The line between you and your phone company can be 10,000 feet long - adding even a hundred foot cord of reasonable quality will have no effect.
There are exceptions - like faulty cords, bad contacts, or in unusual cases interference from things light flourescent lights, etc.

This helps a lot, thanks!!
In this case I'll buy a longer cord right away an move my puter to a more comfortable room (I'm now in the basement...)

YES!!!! It makes a difference. The modem speeds can slow down and be unreliable the longer the phone cord is. And the more connections, like a splitter, the more iffy the connections. Of course this doesn't always hold true as there are always exceptions to the rule, but you can figure that out. The recommended length for a phone cord is the length of phone cord that came with your modem. Which is somewhere around 10 feet.

basically long cord has more chance for damage. bottom line do what you need to connect if the speed seems unsatisfactory try something else. ;)

Baloney. It doesn't make a difference in most cases.
