As soon as the USR Performance Pro modem picks up the phone line, there is all sorts of static and garbage noise, which prevents it from hearing the dial tone. After trying everything i even exchanged the modem for a new one and still no luck. I read another post here where other people were having the same problems -- becuase USR hasnt come out with drivers for winME. I also am running winME and wanted to know if anyone out there knows how to fix this problem!!

You can put x3 in the extra settings in the modem properties and it will not even look for a dial tone and just dial.

It is also wise to make sure that the noise you are refering to is not from the line itself. Test the line with a regular telephone, if the same sound is present then you may need to either replace your phone cable or call your phone company and have your outside lines tested.

I had the same problem. They claimed it was IRQ, I claim it is just laziness. After 3 years of PCI modem, they still can't make one that is worth a $#@T.
So I had to purchase a 5605 external, and still get lame connections most of the time.
