It would appear that USR/3Com modems fall into 7 main categories:

1. Internal ISA Modem
2. Internal ISA Winmodem
3. Internal PCI Modem
4. Internal PCI Winmodem
5. RS-232 External Modem
6. USB Modem
7. USB Modem with RS-232 Serial Port option

Why don't they clearly state the modem category on the package and/or the technical documentation? You see irrelevant features like Fax-Data-Voice-Messaging-Internet-Gaming in bold letters associated with cryptic code numbers such as 000839-xx, 000840-xx, 001750, 001783-00, 002605-00, 005605-00, 005609-00, 005610-00, 005610-01, 005683-00, 005683-03, 005686-xx, 005687-xx, 005689-03, 005690-00, 005690-00, 005695, 005698-00, 005699-00, 2884, 3CP5610, 3CP5610A, 3CP5613, 3CP5699A. This is ridiculous! AND misleading! Now, can anybody tell which is which by those numbers?

At the end of the day when you buy a new product it is essential to know what category your modem happens to be. To make you aware whether your money goes for a good-for-nothing chip or the real thing. It's also important afterwards, for troubleshooting and upgrading proceedings. Oh yes, and customer claims!

Mine is a 56K Voice Internal PCI V90, X2, etc., model 2884, retail Europe, bought last week and I'm still unsure whether it falls into No.3 or No.4 category.

Not only those. There is also the category they call OEM. Computer stores call these "bulk" modems and have no intention or ability to support them. They are sold as USR modems so the customer thinks he has a USR modem *until* he tries to go to the USR support site when he gets a rude awakening: no support from anybody!

I agree.
And because they keep coming out with new model #s, if someone comes up with a cross-reference, it will soon be outdated by the introduction of yet another model....
