Anywhere from 20 seconds to four hours after I connect the modem stops recieveing data. It still sends every once in a while, but it never recievees anything. If disconnect and connect again, it is ok for another 20 seconds to four hours and then it does it again... any ideas why?

Not enough info to diagnose.
Could be anything from your ISP/backbone
Link
to your modem
Link - the modem diag screens can tell you if you have a modem problem.

I have a similar problem with a 3com v.90. Frequently but intermittantly appears to accept the first few bits of a download, then just stops and, in case of email, times out. The connection is not lost. There is an occasional handshake effort from my end. After a few reboots problem goes away for hours, then resumes without any action on my part that I can determine. Are there any parameters I can check?

You can disconnect and check the modem diag screen to see if anything looks unusual - http://808news.com/56k/diag3com.htm
I'd be concerned w/ retrains and the final rx/tx speeds compared to original connect rate.

However, it could be your ISP beyond the modem: let me tell you that I've tried oodles of ISPs using different access #s & equipment, and none of them is able to provide reliable service all the time - ie, the reliability of Internet Access is nothing like the reliability of making a voice phone call. In particular, the UUNet POP here (used by many different ISPs) will all too frequently will stay connected to my modem just fine, but I lose all DNS/PPP contact with the world - there's not a problem with the modem (does it with 3Com & Lucent), it's UUNet & its access server/router. Sometimes, it will come back and work again, and sometimes I'm just too impatient, hang up, redial and it works again.

Aloha,
Richard
