I have a USR Sportster x2 internal flashed to V90. I connect to my ISP @ 45333, and according to PCPitstop and other download indicators including MyVitalAgent, have a thruput of 38 -40k. My problem is when I stop to read a web page, then click on a link, I often get no response for some time. If I do repeated clicks around the page and/or the refresh button, or the MyVitalAgent dash board, the downloading usually comes alive. Often I will have to click on another web address from the favorites menu to jog the system, them go back to the desired site to activate the link that I want. What can I do to "wake up" the system?
I've used iSpeed and messed with the MTU, but found that the Win98SE default setting give the best thruput. I've the ini string AT&F1s15=28&U28&N39
to "extra settings" to control the connection speed and disable v.42 to prevent "the black whole". Nothing I've done seems to help. This has occurred with 4 different ISP's. Please help :(

Do away with the at& f1 as well as the s15=128(you shouldn't turn off v42 compression). Also, the &n39 sets a max speed of 57,333, which is useless, since 53 is max allowed anyway. Try this string instead, with NO at&f1 before it:

&u17&n28

The &n28 sets limit at 42666. Try it and see if it improves. If not, change the n value to &n25. This will set max at 38666.

Lastly, hit ctrl alt del and "end task" on everything but Explorer and RNAAPP. This will ensure nothing in background is stalling you. You're not using some proxy internet booster, etc., right?

Thanks Sarge, I changed the ini string and that seemed to help somewhat. I have a straight hookup to a pay isp in town, and the telco office is 2-3 miles away.
The most frequent log on speed was 45333, and an occasional 49333, so it took a while to train the server to log on at 42666. When I check the connection to the isp thru hyperterminal AT commands, the S/N ratio is usuall 45-47, but on occasion, I see a s/n of 37. Maybe flakey connections between here and there. Anyway thanks again.
