This is my mothers modem they have only had it for about 7 weeks they had a storm but they have it on a modem protector type surge protector she said that the internet dialer starts trying to work but they here no dial tone and it want dial they do here some sort of noise they tried reinstalling the drivers it didn't work.I read a minute ago that this modem had firmware memory chips that do not run off electrical power.if it did get struck by lightning and assuming the rom,prom,eprom,and eeprom firmware chips run off of a battery like some clocks in the newer computers ,if they even run off of power at all i don't know .that maybe the battery could be changed and the firmware could be updated would that do anything ?I really need some advice any advice is appreciated

Batteries have nothing to do with it;
Sometimes, you may still be able to use a damaged modem that doesn't detect dial tone by disabling call progress detection ( x1 in extra settings ). The easiest way to check - Use Hyperterminal - reset to factory defaults (AT&F1 for USR), then ATx1, then try to dial. Sometimes too, even though modem may work, its performance will be adversely affected.

You may want to look in some other posts , connection problems, and garble problems. Sounds like you may be having some of the same stuff.
Try hyperterm and do the ath1 off hook and see if you get good tone. If you get squeal or garble, then join the party.
