I have just switched to win 98 and my external modem does not give a dial tone.
The AT 17 log gives a product ID of 01178600
I have had the modem appart and the chips have texas instruments on them
Can anyone help i would be really greatful

Do you not hear the dialtone or does Windows just report "No Dialtone"?
Might first try rebuilding the telephon.ini to see if that helps.

Thanks. I don't even hear the dial tone ,will try rebuilding the telephone ini,
Has ADD Analogue and digital devices gone out of business, they supplied the modem, but their web site does not respond

The 01178600 appears to be a USR International or European modem number but I don't see it listed on the USR UK site.
How about a bit more info, post -any- numbers that you can find on the modem.
Also test the modem in Hyperterminal.

The start the Hyperterminal session and issue the following commands:
1. Type ATE1 <hit enter> (E one, entered blindly, allows you to see what you type afterwards)
2. Type AT &F M1 L3 <hit enter>
3. Type AT H1 <hit enter> (that's H one)
4. Type ATH <hit enter>
If you don't hear the dial tone in line 3 then check the phone cord, make sure it's plugged into the LINE jack on the modem. If the cord is connected properly then there may be a problem with the modem, end of test.
If you heard the dial tone then continue.
5. Type ATDT your phone number <hit enter> (the ph # that the modem is on, ex. ATDT 5551234)
6. Hit enter to disconnect.
If you made it all the way through to line 6 and the modem dialed out ok then you may have a Windows problem. If the modem still reports NO DIALTONE in line 5 then either the dial tone is not standard or the modem is defective.
