I have a US Robotics OEM 56k voice internal modem-- product ID 66174981 with the following options:
V32bis,V80,V34+,x2,V90
Flash date 4/22/98
Flash rev 4.7.35
On the USR web site under OEM downloads there is an 661749.exe INF file without a rev(flash) number or date. Is this later than what I have. Should I download it. Is my modem camparable to a standard USR modem. If so what model?

You raised an issue closely related to one I just got involved with.

I've just been looking at the "Sportster Modem Flasher" website - http://flasher.webzone.ru/ - run by a Russian guy who worked out his own method of flashing Sportster modems after USR's Modem Update Wizard killed his modem.

On his site is a downloadable file (SMF.ICL - "Sportster Modem Flasher - ID Compatibility List") with listings of comparable models.

One of the lists in that file implies that your model 66174981 is comparable with model 00568500 - a Sportster internal voice modem.

I'm trying to figure out what Sportster is comparable to my Global Village Teleport 56 (ISA) - model ID TIGVIN1F.

Has anyone tried the Flasher's files? He implies that a lot of his flash files are equivalent, but when I tried to use one of them, it complained that the product ID didn't match.

I'm afraid of killing my modem if I altered the ID within one of his flash files, and then tried to use it.

I've already flashed it to V.90 with the "official" update available at

http://www.globalvillage.com/support/teleportpc-56k-int.html

Another article I read (a product review in some magazine on zdnet) implied that the firmware is not as good as the ones in "real" Sportsters. Hence my attempt to re-flash it.

Another question I have is about the jumpers - supposedly they need to be set once the modem is updated to V.90, because PNP won't necessarily work any more. This seems to be true, but the diagram I found in a Sportster manual doesn't seem to be 100% accurate - for instance, with some settings Windows will give me COM5 even though there is no jumper setting for that.
