How do I stop my modem (Internal USR)from answering the phone

Any voice messaging or fax software running at startup set to auto-answer?

If the modem has dip switches on it then change setting for dip switch 5 (flip the switch the opposite way).

Check the ati5 response in Hyperterminal, see if S0 (S zero) register is set to any number other than zero, if so then issue at&f1s0=0&w to the modem. Then call or have someone call the line that the modem is on to see if it still answers the call.
