I have a very strange problem here. I have a Courier V. Everything external V.90 (latest code) and a internal Rockwell HCF V.90. I hook up with the Rockwell at 44,000 - 45,000 and have a stable conn. The 3Com hooks up never higher than 36,000. In running a tracert, the 3Com has over 3 second lag at various nodes, causing stalled out DL's. I immediatly switch and reconn with the Rockwell and see no lag spikes. Not to mention 10kbps higher conn rate. I have tested the 3Com and there are no defects.

I have also an internal 3Com 2977 V.90 and it does the same as the Courier. (Tested on 2 diff ISP's, 1 with USR, the other with Lucent) Now if I limit the 3Com's by disabling v.90, I get 28,8 - 32,000 conn's and there is no trouble with stalling out and the high intermittent downstream latency. Web pages load great and my online gaming latency is outstanding.

What would cause the 3Com's to perform so badly when stacked up against a $20. Rockwell Winmodem and what could I do to improve the 3Com over 33,6 performance?

Regards,

The Rockwell has a sustained DL rate of 4.5kps. The 3Com's can rarely finish a DL (times out) when hooked up over 33,6 and with V.90 disabled, the 3Com has an average 3.2kps DL rate.

Can you post the results of ATi6i11y11 from your 3Com modem? Note - use the code keyword in brackets to format the output - see the FAQ.

Richard

I would suggest trying a test call to a 3Com Access Server (like AT&T Worldnet #s) and see if you get same behaviour.

Your i11 status line indicates 3Com modem thinks you are on B-type codec, without padding and with a high s/n ratio.
The codec type detected is typically used in old hybrid switches (1AESS); you could also be served by some sort of digital subscriber loop system; the modem may not be correctly identifying digital impairments; it may be related to the particular modem type you are calling to.

Aloha,
Richard

Since both 3Coms have the same trouble, I have tried the At11 with both my modems on 2 different ISP's, 1 using Lucent, the other 3Com. They both will not gain the connect speed of the Rockwell on either server. I have sent the at11 to 3Com and they said it was my phone line as I assumed they would. I still have no idea why the Rockwell winmodem has zero troubles getting 44k connects with my phone lines but the 3Com's do. US West says that I have their newest phone system in my housing development (5 years old), and the A/D conversion is about 1000 feet from my house the lineman told me.

I have been battling this beast for over a year and would really like to find some way of getting my 3Com modems to actually use v.90 from my location.

I sure appriciate your input but I have just become even more perplexed and frustrated over this problem with 3Com modems.

Regards,

Rob
